Goal-setting is for amateurs

One key difference between Amateurs and Professionals?

Amateurs have goals, Professionals have a process.

In case you are wondering what the difference is… Here it is:

A goal is merely a statement of intention, that is all it is. A process on the other hand are (well thought out) steps that need to be taken in a certain sequence, in other to get a specific result.

The first month of the year is the time most people set up all those goals for themselves: what they want, what they don’t want and how they want things to go.

However, the boys are separated from the men when it is time to outline the process needed in order for that to happen.

Professionals don’t stop at goal setting…. it must become a clearly defined process they plan to follow.

What is your personal development process?

What is your business marketing process?

What is your idea development process?

What is your spiritual development process??

Conventional thinking only leads to one thing

Mediocrity.

That is what conventional thinking leads to.

If you are thinking like everybody out there… there is no way you can stand out.

The world is the way it is today because everybody is blending in, very few have the boldness to really standout and take outside-the-box approaches to everything.

Conventional thinking only leads to one thing, mediocrity… and I am guessing that is not what you want for yourself.

Brave up, take some risks… dream better.

We have to.

Any other thing is leading to the very thing we are running away from: mediocrity.

Nobody cares about what you know. Try this instead.

I want to let you in on a big secret of my life and success so far.

I might be everything people say I am: brilliant, self-driven, highly optimistic and visionary…

However, this is all irrelevant.

What really matters is that I care.

See, people are not so interested in what you know or how you do your things… they are most interested in knowing that you care about them…

So, stop trying to bamboze and impress people with your vast knowledge, rather… show them that you care. That you really care about them.

Your favourite suppliers and contractors are most likely to be people that have shown that beyond this transaction: we actually care about whether you make it or not.

Seth Godin always points out that we now more or less live in a “connection economy”; more than ever before, you need to take your time to actually connect with people.

First show that you really care.

Then show that you know your craft.

Then, and only then can we talk about really making real money.

The era of transactional business is over.

Ride a wave

If you do not have the might and scale of big companies…

You have to master the art of riding upon an existing wave.

You might have a lot of brilliant, innovative ideas… but unless we can somehow tap into current trends and movements….

Selling those ideas might be tough.

It is difficult to roll out a completely new product from the very beginning.

You have to see how you can tie it into things your target audience already like and can identify with.

It saves a lot of valuable time.

Forget money, here are 5 other tradable commodities in business

To start a business, money is not the only resource you can draw upon.

There are a lot of other things that are much more valuable to you as a business person than money.

Leke Alder identified 6 tradable commodities in business: goodwill/favour, network, knowhow, equity, assets and cash.

You read that right, there are 5 other items on that list other than money.

So, a smart business builder (that’s you, by the way) should learn to draw upon the other tradable commodities and learn how to get them to work for you.

I am able to do a lot with so little money because I have certainly learned how to leverage the first 3 items on Leke Alder’s list: goodwill/favour, network and knowhow.

The truth is that it is sheer arrogance to think that money can open every door. There are some challenges that you will face and no matter how much money you throw at it, it will not go away….

When I started out in business, I used to be a very shy person but I have since crawled out of my shell to build a valuable network.

I do quite a decent amount of networking, meeting new people and engaging them to see common goals we might share and trying to achieve such goals together. Building a valuable network takes a great chunk of time and conscious effort, but it is always worth it.

Therefore, let us stop thinking money is the only thing we need to forge ahead. It is a short-sighted view of the world…

Look further.

By the way, I actually pulled this out of one of the modules of the #TMP StartUP School starting next month.. online.

Let us build ideas this September!

If you are yet to signify, just holla me.

It is always about the profit margin

Forget all those fat business books, thousands of pages long… that are describing business in riddles.

Business is all about selling something cheaper than you got it.

That’s all there is to business.

That’s why I’m suggesting you look for high profit margins in your industry… they exist in all industries.

The issue is that they are usually not-so-obvious. They require some thinking and digging.

For several years, people where disappointed when I decided I wasn’t launching a web hosting company.

For many, they felt it was a no-brainer move for me.

For me, web hosting was a boring commodity business where I wasn’t sure what exactly would make my own web hosting company be different.

However, after much thinking and study… I discovered I could do stuff in the WordPress hosting niche.

WordPress hosting is a higher margin business than the general web hosting space and it’s not a commodity business.

How I hate commodity businesses!

So… don’t just be in business.

Settle in the most profitable niche (or sub niche) you can find.

From my personal experience and work with clients, I know they exist.

Automation is bae 😍😍

A lot of the gurus have said over and over again: unless you find a way to make money while you sleep, you cannot become build any meaningful wealth.

Picture this:

You wake up in the morning, fire up your mobile phone and right there you find credit alerts from your bank. All transactions done over night, goods already shipped… Nothing more for you for do than to smile and say a little prayer.

I have been discussing a lot with my insiders and I thought I also share same here.

You must decide that your business is no longer allowed to go to sleep when you do.

It is very possible to develop automated systems that work round the clock for you, acquiring customers and receiving payment and handling final fulfillment.

Whoever wants to build a big business these days must realise that she does not need as much staff as people used to… and also, it is important to automate the business processes as much as possible.

I have tried to automate some of my processes before, but now… I have to do more.

All in.

This tool will grow your business sharp-sharp.

One of the most important tools for business growth these days is community.

More than ever before, it is important to build community around what you do.

Creating a space for people like you to connect, learn from each other and grow.

People generally come to you for your content and what you have to offer, and stay for the community.

I have enjoyed using community to build my business over the years, and even though it is a major time suck…

…it pays off nicely. Pays off in a huge manner!

Our #TMP community is up on Facebook groups (the no-brainer choice).

We’ve tagged it “Innovative Businesses ONLY”, yeah… we aren’t messing around.

The group will be a central hub for discussions around how to start and grow your innovative businesses… and that’s where we will continue our “Watching The World” series.

Sharing top notch articles, videos and resources.

You can join by following this link: https://facebook.com/groups/InnovativeBusiness

Help us spread the word, let’s get this train up!

Nothing is Impossible takes on a new meaning

In 2004, when the Co-Founders of Facebook were building the first version of that platform…

…a simple website with basic features, they had no idea the kind of powerful force it could evolve into.
A simple website built with open source PHP/MySQL went on to beat them all and reign supreme.

Aliko Dangote started small, trading and trading…

…then one day, he got this idea that Africa should build a future of self-sufficiency.

Like play, like joke….

Dangote group has done $18 billion of business in the span of about four years, which is almost unheard of in Africa.

Nothing is impossible.

This morning, I stumbled upon the pictures I had of the grand Eko Atlantic City project…. my mind was blown.

One wise man once said that “buy land, they aren’t making more of those!”

He definitely didn’t know things like the Eko Atlantic City project would ever exist.

My point?

We need to dream big and take corresponding bold steps.

Dreaming big doesn’t mean we cannot start small.

To be bold and ready to take risks is much better than being a genius!

It is way better to apologise than ask for permission…. (but never never repeat this one publicly, ok?)

Nothing is impossible.

There is no change we cannot effect.

Now that you know, what will you do about it?

P.S.

The link for #TMP online community drops tomorrow morning.

P.P.S.

StartUp School kicks off this September. If you have an idea you want to kick off (or know someone who does), please get in touch.

The making of a September to remember

September is on my mind.

September is a few days away and I have become consumed with the kind of month I would love to have.

There is this pun people deploy once September comes knocking on the doors…

They wish you a September to remember.

Pretty nice?

Anyways, all the wishes in the word cannot do you any good if you do not take action… and so, I have decided a good way to make September memorable is by running a small challenge.

What if we made September memorable by creating some time and space to work on those passion projects of ours?

I have always been inspired by Joel Gascoigne’s story of how he went from having an idea to getting his first paying customers in just 7 weeks.

He had participated in the “November Startup Sprint” where lots of people agreed to try and get something launched by the end of November.

He got to work… and got the job done.

You should google Buffer to see how well they are doing nowadays.

So…

This september…

If you are up for it…

I am looking at how you and I can work together to move your ideas into reality.

I also have an idea I am going to build out in September.

If you will take the decision, you too can build out your app, ecommerce site, online membership site, social media website, business, NGO, school or whatever you want this very September.

Now, that would be a September to Remember!

Are you in?
