“Leadership is not about a person sitting on top of the tree and shouting down orders. That is not leadership, that is dictatorship” – Richard Branson, Virgin Group.
This is one of the most profound definitions of leadership I have ever seen.
A lot of people mix up leadership with giving orders, but they are different. I believe that leadership is about setting up an example for people to follow, when you lead properly, even rebels will surrender to you.
This is why it is important for us to spend as much time as is needed to become the kind of person people would love to follow. Become the kind of man people seek out to follow.
Leadership by giving orders rarely works well in the long run.

Most people dream about working for long hours, 24 hours every day if possible, all in the name of maximum productivity. We think working long hours will help us get more done, but the fatigue we feel suggest otherwise.
Word hard, pray harder, play hard and rest well… these things cannot be overemphasized. Even God rested after all his work, why is taking a break from work so hard to do for some people?
Humans will always be humans, and as such, the body always strikes back. I would not want to end up like the Goldman Sachs employee who burned out and then died due to overwork.
Rest, you must. When you tackle problems with a fresh mind only sleep can bring, you tend to get more done in shorter time.

I do not really find anything interesting to report. Did you?
As technology gets better and better. We will be able to run our projects faster, better and from anywhere.
Many of the business books we read are not so useful in these digital times. They are written by experts in the way business used to be done.
Some of the cool things we can now do include hiring virtual staff to handle customer support, outsourcing manufacturing of your products to China, creating powerful web presence at minimal costs.
The future belongs to those who can harness technology and use it to run faster and better than their competitors who insist on doing things the good old way.
It began with the boldness to speak up that web search engines were not working well, then sitting down to think up something better and then been crazy enough to drop out of school inorder to pursue it. That is how Google started, and as I read through the website they setup to explain the Google self driving car project, I respected how far they have gone and I could not shake off the nudging: What if you took the first step towards your own vision, where could it lead?
A deep research I conducted about the top infrastructure companies developing India revealed to me that they all started from different businesses and industries, in fact, one of the companies I found was started by 3 brothers who in 1960, laid the foundation for their company by starting a transport business with one truck (a converted bus) inherited from their father.
Once you have a vision, you can start out towards it from wherever you are right now. The hard work is usually receiving a vision in the first place.
What if you took the first step? Where could it lead?
When it comes to these things: starting new businesses, starting a new movement or changing the world. The key lies not in our own brilliance, plans or awesomeness of the mission. The keys to the dream-dom; that glorious or wonderful endpoint you have in mind seems to be some other factors.
It is usually about do you have enough faith to start?
Will you be patient enough to stick with it even though it seems not to be working?
Will you remain bold and consistent even though every cell in your mortal body wants to give up and return to status quo?
Our office hours are between 8am – 4pm and that is when we handle all complains; do not try calling or texting us outside these times.
We cannot go the extra mile for you, so please, do not make any special request.
Our generic services ought to be enough for everybody.
All we do is sell services, you ought to be able to fix everything else on your own.
These are great ways to drive your customers away, isn’t it?

Smart business owners empower their staff. Make them feel like they are really a part of this thing and not just working for their next pay check. Amazing things happen when you empower your hard working staff and give them the room to work on things that matter and allow them improve their skills and get better.
As a business owner, if you find that 5 star employee, that one employee whose work output is 10x better than the average staff member. It is a no-brainer, empower her and give yourself room to work on other aspects of the business.
Empowering your staff is not only about paying them well (it is part of it), it is also about giving them room to try their own ideas, giving them freedom to make mistakes and learn. It is about setting a mission and getting out of the way, allowing them to get it done their own way while you offer guidance as needed.
The more you empower your staff, the better and smoother things will run in the business.

These days, the level of immaturity and mediocrity that our Nigerian society seems to encourage is quite high. You can get away with crap and still get to be hailed as king of them all.
This is an unfortunate development, because we are living in an increasing global world. I no longer have to be the best programmer in my “city”, I have to rank as high as possible on a global scale. I have to provide a good reason why I should be picked ahead of the competition.
When buying online from China or Nigeria will cost me the same thing, and the delivery period is roughly the same waiting period, why should I buy from you?
It seems Nigerians have so far decided to live by quite low standards and this is permeating through everything we do. The way I see it, if we are serious about competing on the big stage, we might just have to set our own personal standards, using globally acceptable benchmarks. Real standards, excellence all the way.
If you cannot run towards achieving your goals as fast as you would love to, then walk, if you cannot walk, then crawl. What is most important is that you keep on moving.
There is power in moving towards your goals.
This new month, let us give it all we got, who knows what can come out of it? We must not allow the despair and failures of last month to weigh us down. Yesterday is gone, we have to move on and keep moving.
